Marie Claire (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

This magazine has really grown on me of late, for a lot of reasons. Glamour and Cosmo don't appeal to me as much, partly due the the drop in their quality, and partly just due to the fact that I'm not in their target age group. Marie Claire has far more articles that are in line with my interests. They attempt to cover real issues that have an impact on women's lives. They are able to write stories about the status of women in the world (i.e. their Taliban articles) in a way that makes the information accessible without treating the reader like you are stupid and totally oversimplifying. I also like that not all the models look anorexic, and they don't inundate the reader with diet advice, or articles on sex and how to find/get/keep a man. This is still a light beach read compared to a hard new magazine, but it's far better than most other magazines in this genre.. this is my Marie Claire (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Redbook (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

Just canceled my subscription, after a year-and-a-half. Unfortunately, for my tastes and lifestyle (40s, married, business owner, no children). I think Redbook is trying to be too well-rounded. I used to love this magazine (especially back in HS and college), but now it seems like it trying to appeal to too many audiences at once...a few pages of Cosmo-style sex-related articles, a few pages of Women's World-style life-threatening articles, a few pages of Health- magazine "you too can have abs of steel" articles, and way too pages of Parent's Magazine-style articles. The only thing I found myself enjoying was the "Most Embarrassing Moments" feature. I think that a magazine with an article about "Red Hot Sex Kissing Games" a few pages away from an article about "Kids Get Dry Skin Too" is not focused enough. On top of this (and perhaps because of it), it seemed as though most of their articles only touched the surface of any one topic, -- all headlines and captions, no substance. I think Vanity Fair, Jane, or Marie Claire might be a better choice for those who want a more focused magazine that delves into its topics more thoroughly.. this is my Redbook (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Clean Eating Reviews

Despite giving this magazine only three stars, I will say that I end up buying/subscribing often...the exercise ideas, the short 'tip'-type stories, and the simple recipes are all great motivation and inspiration. But, as a fairly experienced amateur baker and cook, I find many of the recipes fall short (either instructions are incomplete or inaccurate, or the quantities are a bit off, or the end product looks ridiculously different from the photos). I can really only remember one baking failure on my own part with any other cookbook or magazine recipe, but everything I've tried from the magazine has had at least one problem. And while the simple, straight forward cooking recipes I've tried from the magazine have come out well, the more complex recipes have not (or I have had to significantly fill in the blanks of the instructions, as they failed to explain how to do some steps). So if you are not experienced in the kitchen, I highly recommend sticking to the simple stuff or finding a different source for recipes. The magazine has good quality photos and fitness advice, and is well laid out.. this is my Clean Eating reviews

Cooking Light (1-year auto-renewal)

Cooking Light (1-year auto-renewal)

Cooking Light (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

Cooking Light used to be one of my favorite magazines because it had genuinely light recipes that were both healthful and tasty. Over the years the recipes somehow got more and more fattening and the articles more boring, but I still always found recipes I liked in every issue. I never liked the "lifestyle" articles as they took up the entire first half of the magazine and were a complete bore, in my opinion. But still, it was one of my favorite magazines. I had let my subscription lapse for several months when I got an invitation from Amazon for a $5.00 rate for one year. It was too good to pass up so I went for it. Well, when I got my first issue it became immediately apparent to me that this was not the same magazine that I had known and loved for so long. I then learned that the entire editorial staff was fired last year and a new one put in its place. That, plus the entire format of the magazine had been completely overhauled. Don't get me wrong - Some of the changes are positive and I think CL can theoretically benefit from some sort of redesign. I like the new color photo with each recipe, plus the type fonts and layout are in general more up to date and pleasant to look at. In addition, the "lifestyle and fitness" section that ate up the entire first half of the magazine is gone and the recipes are more spread out amongst more concise, "bullet point" style one page articles. That to me is both good and bad - The layout is better and the boring stuff is gone from the first half of the magazine, but the information in the new "sound byte" articles is not really that interesting nor informative and at times even the longer articles are just ho-hum. Plus, gone are the letters to the editor and some of the reader input articles that were a part of the old format. On top of that, the recipes themselves show no sign of getting any lighter. In fact they seem to be getting heavier and heavier - That is, more calories and fat in every serving than ever before. And the types of recipes are heavily weighted towards comfort foods, the kinds of which are impossible to get down to anything below 20 grams of fat per serving. 20 grams of fat per serving, people!!! Is this light cooking? I don't think so! At least if you're going to make a magazine about light cooking, give people what you say you're giving them. I can find 20 gram of fat recipes in any cooking magazine. Why do I need this one? I'm not asking for ridiculously low counts, but something hovering about 10 grams of fat would be fine. What made Cooking Light a great magazine is that it was different from all the rest. Now it is just more of the same. Ho hum, I can get that anywhere. The irony of it is that the other day I found the November issue of CL in my doctor's office. Inside was a "sound byte" article encouraging us to "make peace with those few extra pounds". I guess this is some sort of propaganda to justify the higher fat and calorie counts in their supposedly "light" recipes. And the truly ironic part is that if I make those recipes I surely WILL have to make peace with a few extra pounds, LOL! By the way, what's up with people rating the magazine without even having read it yet? I don't get that. If you haven't read it yet, you can't critique it. And by the way, Amazon was very clear that it could take up to 10 weeks or so to receive your first issue. Duh, that is only par for the course with magazines in general in my experience.. this is my Cooking Light (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

I've got subscriptions to 3 cooking magazines (Eating Well, Bon Apetit, and Everyday Food), and this one is by FAR the most useful. I want healthy food but I also work long hours and can't spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The recipes in Eating Well are tasty, easy to make, and creative. The ingredients can be found at any grocery store and are usually things I have on hand. I look forward to every issue to find out what new recipes we'll be cooking up this month. I highly recommend it!. this is my EatingWell (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Cricket Reviews

My mom set up a subscription to Cricket for me back in 1976 when I was in elementary school. I always loved reading and wasn't happy with the same old "See Spot Run" books. Mom saw that I was getting bored with the same old stuff and decided to give the magazine a try. I got the first few issues and didn't really do anything with them. But once a rainy day came around, I decided to pick them up and give them a try. After that, I was hooked on the stories, the artwork, the games, and the contests the magazine runs each month. Each issue had its own theme and I always found the quality to be top notch. I found out Cricket had only came to be a few years earlier and went to the library with my dad to dig up some back issues. I was introduced to such writers as Shel Silverstein, Lloyd Alexander, Walter De La Mare, Clifton Fadiman, Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg and William Shakespeare. I find myself coming back to Cricket time and again. I still have my original issues and hope to share them with my kids once they're older. They truly have a timeless quality. I highly reccommend this magazine to parents whose children have expressed an interest in reading. . this is my Cricket reviews

Vanity Fair (1-year auto-renewal)

Vanity Fair (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

Vanity Fair has undergone a major transformation in the last several years from magazine geared towards women to a monthly that appeals to a much broader audience. The writing has gotten consistently better as well, though the occasional article will be little more than fluff. Photography is always lush, with the art world's top talent contributing beautiful done shots of major stars. Issues like Young Hollywood, or New Music Stars are fantastic, and every issue is something fresh and interesting. In any given month we get a star showcase on the cover. Recent months have seen Lindsay Lohan, Sandra Bullock, and Hilary Swank. Interviews with these stars are fascinating because they invariably reveal more than they expect to. A recent interview with Sheryl Crow revealed the best of Vanity Fair, an intelligent, emotional, and honest interview that reveals a lot about Sheryl. The acccompanying photography is simply gorgeous. Every month has a rambling diary from the frequently tiresome Dominic Dunne (yes Dom, we get it, you know everyone.), a hard hitting political piece, and a expose on the past of politics, hollywood, or society. The articles are mostly great stuff, but with some clunkers in every issue. Every time I receive an issue, I know there will be articles that will fascinate me. Friends use to claim that Vanity Fair was a girl's magazine. Well, its not just for women anymore. That being said, don't just order here. Go to their website and to the subscription inserts in the magazine itself, compare the prices, and request that a billing notice be sent to you instead of paying with a credit card. This way when your subscription is up for renewal, you have the opportunity to cancel without your card being charged. Often times sites like this one utilize a third party service that contracts with the various magazines, your payment goes to them and they auto-renew you. I find it easier to do it through the magazine themselves. Saves me the trouble, and invariably, the magazine comes a lot quicker.. this is my Vanity Fair (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

My family has enjoyed this magazine for years. I agree that the solicitations for renewal are overkill and addressed this concern by having my mother's subscription sent to me. The beautiful photography is a joy for Mom now that dementia has limited her ability to read. Other magazines are often tossed in the trash, but Birds and Blooms is enjoyed by three generations until the pages are worn. It's great to have a magazine that focuses on something positive. Vegetarian Times (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

First, the disclaimer. I am not a vegetarian. I have, however, planned many vegetarian menus and cooked thousands of vegetarian meals, both professionally and at home. This magazine has a rather quaint approach to cover art and illustrations that reminds me of magazines that my mom read in the sixties. Apart from its appearance, the recipes are wildly inconsistent. Some are very good, fast, and easy to prepare. Others are bland and lifeless, reinforcing the misconception that vegetarian food is uninteresting and "healthy tasting." Some of the recipes contain obvious errors and omissions or call for such odd proportions that one wonders if they were tested prior to publication. Vegetarian Times seems to try reasonably hard to avoid the sanctimony and self-righteousness that afflicts so many publications in this genre. Nonetheless, there is enough polemicizing to annoy when it intrudes on the culinary purposes of the magazine. My final observation is that this magazine has one of the worst advertisement-to-content ratios that I've ever seen. In a couple of recent issues, the ratio of ads to recipes is nearly one to one. I don't mind paying a reasonable price for a useful publication but I do object to paying for the privilege of reading marketing hype. Bottom line? There are better vegetarian cookbooks readily available through Amazon or other dealers. Robin Robertson and Madhur Jaffrey both offer superior alternatives.. this is my Vegetarian Times (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Of the many shelter magazines I subscribe to, this has to be in the top three. This magazine is a huge improvement over what it was even a few years ago. A good mix of freshened up traditional, fun, and not-too-concretey modern interiors. Not as funky as Domino, often more current and fun than Veranda and Southern Accents. More traditional (and liveable) than Dwell, and way less beige than uninspirational Architectural Digest. Less old-world than World of Interiors. Discover (2-year)

Discover (2-year)

Discover (2-year) Reviews

As a scientist/educator, I enjoy reading about current science being done in all fields, whether neuroscience or astronomy. We get so specialized in our fields sometimes, we forget about the other sciences which we are not personally involved in. This is one of the better science journals for laypeople who have limited background in most sciences. It's great for me, and I have a large background in most sciences. But so much happens in all areas of scientific endeavor that it is impossible to keep up with. So a magazine like Discover helps to close the gap on my personal ignorance in other areas of science besides neuroscience. Discover is by the same people running Discovery Channel. Their information is good, they do the research, and they often broach difficult and contrary science concepts which may not be mainstream yet. Their writers and editors do an excellent job. My own personal favorite article each month is Vital Signs, from doctors about medical cases that may be strange or that need to be brought to the attention of the public. I always read that first. This is a good magazine for high school students to have access to in addition to the regular science textbooks. The type of information given often makes science more accessible for high school students. They can see why someone would choose to go into particular fields of science, and why research is needed. I do not always agree with the information given. Too many times, it seems that Discover and its editors promote ideas or new medical concepts/technology which has not been proven. As always, lay readers should be sure to get a variety of inputs and information, as well as second opinions before accepting what is said by Discover or any other source. An example of this is the retinal implant spoken about in 2001. Readers should not go asking their physicians about such technology for themselves, but should do as much research as possible prior to making a decision on experimental procedures. Discover (2-year) Specs

  • Who Reads Discover?
  • Discover attracts intelligent and curious readers - forward thinkers and public advocates engaging in a dialogue of action that influences opinion leaders and encourages innovation. They are active in their communities, carry a strong voice concerning political issues and are very active in environmental groups.
  • What You Can Expect in Each Issue:
  • Vital Signs: Discover's longest-running and most popular column. Each month, an emergency room doctor describes and solves a real-life medical mystery.
  • Better Planet: Questioning the choices we make about our environment, and how we affect its overall health.
  • 20 Things You Didn't Know About...: An exploration of arcane and interesting bits of information that you may not be able to Google.
  • Data: Informative news section with short pieces on breaking science developments.
  • Blinded by Science: A column where humor meets science, written by novelist Bruno Maddox, nominated for the 2007 National Magazine Award, Columns and Commentary.
  • ThinkTech: Discover's monthly look at technology moving out of the lab and into the mainstream.
  • Features: Cover subjects represent a selection of topical science, technology, environmental, global and health issues that affect our life and the world around us. Recent issues include: Year in Science, Dedicated issue, The Secret Einstein, Better Planet, Extreme Engineering, Scientist of the Year.
  • Past Issues:
  • Contributors:
  • Discover draws on the talents of some of America's premier nonfiction writers, including Walter Isaacson, Jared Diamond, Jim Holt, and Carl Zimmer. Some of our contributors are veteran science journalists; others regard science just as one source of great ideas. What they all have in common is a rare ability to conduct deep investigations into the most complex topics and emerge with stories that will entertain and enlighten anyone who appreciates a good narrative.
  • Magazine Layout:
  • Discover gives its readers the real story: on-the-scene photography, highly personal portrait shots, and cutting edge scientific imagery. The design is elegant and refined--not dry like a textbook, not glossy and remote like a travel guide. Every issue contains a balance of big-idea, text driven stories and more image-rich features that convey the feel of where and how the most amazing research happens.
  • Comparisons to Other Magazines:
  • Discover examines what really matters about science and places it squarely in a human context. It is an accessible guide to the ideas that matter most in today's world. Unlike Scientific American, it is accessible to any curious reader, not just to science insiders. Unlike Popular Science and Popular Mechanics, it focuses on ideas and discoveries, not gadgets and weapons. And unlike National Geographic, it does not shy away from the personal, political, and social aspects of science. Above all, Discover is unique in combining deep, probing reporting with accessible, narrative writing--more in the mode of The New Yorker than in the style of traditional science journalism.

New Moon Girls Reviews

I first came across this magazine years ago when it was a fledgling publication. I was so impressed that I filed it in my memory banks and years later, when my daughter was about 6, I bought her a subscription. She's thirteen and still loves it. This magazine is ad-free and is written by girls, for girls. They promote open-minded exploration of ideas and values. And they explore all sorts of topics girls are interested in, everything from friendships to menstruation to zits to human rights to natural resources -- all without ads or stupid stereotypes. I highly recommend this magazine and often give it as a gift! My only regret: they don't publish a similar magazine for boys! Most boys mags are just trendy trash.. this is my New Moon Girls reviews

Elle Decor (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

Elle Decor is my favorite interior design magazine, along with House Beautiful--I team-teach interior design to adults and am always looking for stylish rooms, the latest design trends, and beautiful images to share with the class. Elle Decor delivers. I anticipate its arrival each month. The magazine is great for training your eye as to what's interesting, stylish and beautiful in today's design world. If you are wanting to update any tired and boring rooms in your home, or rooms you're bored with, it's great for showing you what's new or being reinterpreted in a fresh way. Then you can pick and choose what appeals to you. Taste is about exposure and Elle Decor exposes you to what top designers are doing today so you can incorporate the elements you like in your own home. It features all kinds of rooms and styles in diverse colors from monochromatic to bright colors. One great exercise is to challenge yourself to find something you like in each room even if you don't particularly like a room--it can be a lamp, a rug, a pillow, or piece of art, but you begin articulating and stretching your taste. If you're looking for fresh, sophisticated, interesting design, consider a subscription.. this is my Elle Decor (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

TV Guide (1-year auto-renewal) [Print + Kindle] Reviews

TV Guide used to have complete 24-hour-a-day listings, plus terrific articles about TV actors, trends, etc. Then they remodeled it completely, and now they just aren't about listings, and their articles aren't as good. Sure I can surf the channels on cable, but my provider doesn't list shows more than a few hours in advance, and surfing the web for schedule info is a big drag. I stopped reading TV Guide when they stopped doing complete listings and having great articles, even though it still arrived every week for months. I'd LOVE to go back to it. It used to be something you could pick up really cheaply at the supermarket, for fifteen cents. But I wouldn't mind paying if I was getting a real TV GUIDE.. this is my TV Guide (1-year auto-renewal) [Print + Kindle] reviews

I've been reading People Magazine since the early 80s, so I know I'm not in the demographic they're aiming at any more. It's turned into LOTS and LOTS of reality TV coverage of non-actors, along with very young new actors and musicians, with very limited coverage of established actors. It seems to me they cover a smaller range of people than they used to. I'm telling myself that I"m not going to renew my subscription, but I'm still reading every issue, just skipping the articles about people from shows I would never watch. Their reviews of books and movies are perhaps worth the price of the magazine, and aren't available on their website. If you're interested in reality TV and very young actors and pop musicians, you'll love this mag.. this is my People (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Country Living (2-year) Reviews

This magazine has really gone down hill, coincidentally when the newest editor (Sarah Gray Miller) took over. This magazine used to be my absolute favorite! The features on women entrepreneurs, the crafts, the fresh & unique ideas. The most recent issue (May 2010) however, thought it was a centerfold-worthy idea to (get this) display family photos in a stairwell! This is the sort of creativity CL is producing these days - family photos in a stairwell... I don't know who they think they're reaching, since pretty much every home in America with a stairwell has probably had family photos displayed in it at one time or another. The gall, I think, to pass such ideas off as fresh & new. What will they feature next, hanging a kitchen towel from your stove handle? Putting magnets on a refrigerator? Photography books cleverly displayed on a coffee table? I would not be surprised if their "creative" team is getting inspiration by flipping through 1992's issues of Woman's Day. This magazine is surely no longer worth the money, especially now that it's 50% ads made to look like even more home decorating "ideas". Yes, even for $1, which is Amazon's cost for a year's subscription. It's still not worth it, it's that bad. If you must appease your curiosity, I would suggest maybe flipping through it once a month in the grocery store if you have the time. Most likely you will find, however, that's it's still not worthy buying.. this is my Country Living (2-year) reviews

Wired (1-year auto-renewal) Reviews

You don't have to have a Ph.D. in computers, math, or engineering in order to enjoy this magazine: I don't possess such credentials, and I think Wired is outrageously good. The appeal of Wired is information on cutting-edge technology, delivered in a highly visual, understandable, and often entertaining format. A subtle sense of humor pervades the magazine with features such as "Return to Sender" - a contest in which Wired readers attempt to send the weirdest possible item in the mail to the magazine's San Francisco headquarters; or "Japanese Schoolgirl Watch" - which tracks the latest trendy gadgets favored by one of the world's most trend-obsessed demographic groups. Wired endlessly scrutinizes and ponders on the intersection of technology, humans, and society in its terrific articles. The articles are always interesting, and well-written, with topics such as artificial sight research, or the shenanigans of MIT's Blackjack Team in Las Vegas (9/02 issue); parents of extremely ill children, united via the Internet in their challenges to the medical industry (9/01); or a profile of the Ibot Transporter "inventrepreneur," Dean Kamen (9/00). Wired is a beautifully presented, outstanding magazine. Try one issue - you might get hooked!. this is my Wired (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

Car and Driver (2-year) Reviews

C&D was once entertaining, witty, objective and a great read. The staff worked well together and they put out a consistently good magazine. Then it went through some rough years where it got kind of tame and boring. Now, it's an ill fitting mix of new and old writers trying to be fresh and hip while being spoon fed by the car manufactures. The magazine lacks consistency, focus and any sort of clear vision as to what they're about. C&D mostly seems to print what the biggest manufactures want them to. There have been several articles lately, such as on the new Nissan GT-R and Corvette ZR1, that literally mirror articles in other magazines even featuring some of the same quotes from the same car execs. You might as well go to the manufacture's websites and read their press releases. There has been a lot of inconsistency in C&D's reviews. One car will be rave reviewed, and 4 issues later, will place near the bottom of a multi-car comparison test. The impression is very much whichever manufacture spends the most on ads, dinners, drinks, and other gratuities, gets top billing regardless of the quality and performance of their vehicles. Some of the writing is entertaining, but that's offset by the same tired editors (Csere, Bedard, et al.) who largely keep writing the same stuff they've been whining about for a decade or three. The end result comes off as heavily biased, anything but objective, and an awkard mix of writing styles. My suggestion: Save some trees and just skim the C&D website for their rare entertaining exclusive article and get the rest of your automotive news somewhere else.. this is my Car and Driver (2-year) reviews

First For Women Reviews

"First" is a magazine geared toward "women on the go". It is for the stay at home mom, who does it all(mostly for everbody else). Chauffeur, team mom, cook, housekeeper, hostess, financial consultant, lover, nurse and referee. It is also invaluable to those who must juggle the responsiblities of work and home. The magazine contains dozens of tips and and articles pertaining to making life a little easier. To help you find some spare time and maybe devote a little of it to yourself. It puts you "First". It's well oraganized. Just thumbing through, you'll find what your looking for, as the articles are grouped by subject, and headings for each subject are shown at the top right corner of the pages. In a recent issue that I read, the subject matter includes 'Style', where you will find a few pages of realistic, afforadable wear, and tips on what might suit you best, 'Health', 'Joy', where you may find some inspirational stories from real people, 'Mmmm", this is an entire section of recipes that may be pulled out to insert in a notebook, 'Home', 'Love' and 'Fun'. There is even a crossword puzzle, and some jokes to give you a nice lilttle chuckle, that may be needed. It's a great magazine for real women, with some fabulous ideas for everything from quick meals to decorating, to adding a little romance and stretching the dollar. You'll even find some wonderful excercise and relaxation tips. The price is affordable and worth all the great info inside. Also, you will not find the advertisements taking up more space than the articles..very nice. So if your looking for newsworthy events or what's happening in the world of entertainment, you'll need to find the time to look elsewhere for that(after all, we "women on the go", want time to be informed as well), but for some time for yourself, check out "First". Enjoy....Laurie. this is my First For Women reviews

I have had many problems with this magazine (and shipping company). I had paid for a two year subscription but the with in the first 6 months I missed two issues, when I complained the company I was told those issues were out of stock and I would get 2 months added onto my subscription. The other 4 months were late....and I don't mean a few days late, I mean months late. It was like they didn't have anything to send me so they would send the July issue in September! What a joke. Dealing with the company is even worse, but I did finally manage to get a full refund. As for the magazine itself save your money. It's nothing but ads. None of the articles are written from a serious stand-point and many articles are about clothing style, make-up and hair products for mothers. If I wanted to read about that I would by Lucky, Style, or Cosmo!. this is my Parenting (1-year auto-renewal) reviews

I renewed my WSJ subscription through Amazon because it saved me over $125 per year. ($249 vs. $376.) Amazon states that you can renew through their service, as well as buy new subscriptions. But it has been a major headache. I started receiving 2 issues. When I called WSJ, they said that you cannot renew through Amazon, that this has to be handled as a 2nd subscription. All they could do is put my first subscription on hold for 12 months until my new subscription runs out. Then restart my first subscription for the 2 months that remain on it. WSJ is inflexible and acts like they don't have anything to do with the subscriptions purchased through Amazon. I would advise anyone else purchasing a renewal to Wall Street Journal through Amazon to wait until you have about 3 weeks left on your subscription before renewing. You may end up missing a few issues before your new subsciption kicks in, but that is better than trying to deal with WSJ's customer service dept.. this is my The Wall Street Journal reviews
